What makes the Bible unique?

The word Bible is derived from Greek. It is derived from the word Biblia, which means books. Indeed, the Bible is not one book, but a collection of dozens of books. Because these books are always printed and read as one volume, we always speak about the Bible as if it is really just one book.

The Bible was written thousands of years ago. It is the oldest book on earth. Besides the Bible, no other book has been translated into so many languages, and thousands of copies have been printed and distributed among mankind. No other book has had so much influence on the lives of people.

The Hebrew Scriptures form the first part of the Bible. They form the first book in human history that was translated into many different languages, already in antiquity, many centuries before the birth of Christ.

At the beginning of the 21st century, more than 2000 million copies of the Bible have been printed and distributed all over the earth in more than 2000 languages. These facts in themselves already make the Bible a unique book.

But there is more. Throughout all of its many books, the Bible says that it presents to mankind the thoughts and the words of the one that made the world and everything that exists: the creator of man – God. For the writing of his book, God made use of about forty men – the forty human authors of the Bible. But the Bible does not present the emotions and the thoughts of these human writers. The Bible presents the ideas of God. This means that in the eyes of true Christians, everything that can be read in the Bible is absolutely true. The Bible presents a completely reliable picture of the reality in which people live. It is true that the people who put the words of the Bible on paper were ordinary men. But through His spiritual power, God told them what they were to write.

God has not made his Bible a book that is easy to read. The Bible is a book that should be studied, not a novel that people can just read and enjoy without great effort. It is obvious that God has not wanted to make it easy for people to understand His thoughts and intentions. If people really want to benefit from the wisdom and the knowledge that the Bible offers, a great effort and many hours of studying are required from them. But these do not go unrewarded. But these do not go unrewarded. The Bible provides access to a source of knowledge and insight that surpasses all ordinary human knowledge and insight and is in fact perfect and limitless. God knows and understands everything that is to be known and understood. In His Bible, He presents all knowledge and insight that human beings need in their daily lives.

Besides effort, there is one other thing that people need if they want to understand God’s message and benefit from it – faith. This is the kind of faith that tells people that God exists, that He has made man and everything that exists and that He speaks to us through the Bible. Moreover, this should be the kind of faith that makes people convinced that the Bible represents God’s thoughts and intentions in a perfect way. This kind of faith is particularly needed because now and then, the reader of the Bible will come across Bible passages that arouse irritation and doubt. These will call forth questions like: why does God not express himself in a more understandable way? What does God really mean with these sentences? Doesn’t this Bible passage contradict other Bible passages? Are these thoughts and acts of God completely in accordance with what is true and just? Could not God have expressed Himself and His ideas in a different, better, and more understandable way? Could not God have dealt with certain situations and people in a different way, a better way?

To these kinds of irritations and doubts which are occasionally felt by every reader of the Bible, only faith has a suitable reaction. The Bible does not have to conform to what is perfect in our human eyes. God’s acts and words have to come up to His own standards of perfection. Obviously, His standards of perfection sometimes differ from those of human beings. But faith tells us not to doubt the following principle: the Bible presents to us, in a perfect way, God’s perfect thoughts and the purpose for which God has made the Bible is served by the Holy Book in a perfect way.
